Coffee Cup Conversations

Have you ever found yourself saying, “I never knew that about so and so”? Sometimes you can be pleasantly surprised by certain things you learn about a friend or acquaintance. I have known Zeki Çeler for many years and always thought of him as a man solely interested in Cypriot culture – in particular folk dancing. However, his relatively recent entry into politics was a surprise to me, but that was before I heard from his own mouth that he actually has a degree in political science and public administration.Read More

Anastasiades’ brilliant geostrategic adviser

By Loucas Charalambous (Sunday Mail 23 Nov 2014) I THINK I may need to seek the help of a psychiatrist. Some of our president’s incurable obsessions have been pushing me to the brink of madness. One of these is appointments, which he engages in with carefree abandon; his all-time favourite verb is ‘appoint’. It does not matter whether the committees, sub-committees and councils that he thinks up are needed, nor how much they cost.  This does not interest him, as long as can keep appointing people to new positions. EveryRead More

Random Ramblings

Recently, leading up to and including the “Remembrance Day” celebration/commemoration events, a great deal has been made in the press and media about the bravery of the common soldiers and other servicemen who sacrificed their lives, especially during World War One. I have never gone against popular opinion (oh, yes you have cry people who know me!), but, while some service men and women, or even many of them, were indeed brave, but, in trench warfare, the “common (British) soldiers” were forced to advance across “no-man’s land” with the optionRead More

Coffee Cup Conversations

When you meet someone for the first time, the first few minutes have a great influence on how we perceive that person. We only get one chance to make the right impression. The warm and colourful persona of Mo Davies hit me like a breath of fresh air the instant we met and shook hands. Her short hair tinted mauve, her large earrings and warm smile announce her presence in the room. My recent meeting with Mo was in regards to the “Heart N Art” art exhibition that she isRead More
