President Eroğlu: “Eide’s proposals were not accepted in Ankara as they entail concessions”
President Derviş Eroğlu said that UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide’s proposals to the Turkish Republic were not accepted as they entailed concessions.
Eroğlu added that any precondition laid down by Greek Cypriot side will not be accepted because if Turkish Cypriot side accepted then Greek Cypriot side would continue to ask for more concessions and their demands could even go as far as asking for the return of Güzelyurt.
Expressing that Greek Cypriot side demanded territory from various places including Karpaz, Eroğlu stressed that Turkish Cypriot side’s principles on the issue of property entailed exchange, compensation and return. Moreover, Eroğlu said that they want to avoid as much as possible the displacement of people and emphasized that Turkey’s full and effective guarantee is a sine qua non of the Turkish Cypriots.
Stressing that United Nations did not act impartial, President Eroğlu said United Nations Security Council in its periodic reports avoided mentioning of any dispute and there are two countries among 5 permanent members who are always ready to use their right of veto in favour of the Greek Cypriots.
Regarding the Turkish seismic exploration vessel’s activities in the Mediterranean on behalf of the TRNC, Eroğlu reminded that during the summit meeting held in New York he gave a warning and said in case the Greek Cypriots’ started natural gas exploration activities, Turkish Cypriots would take precautions.
