Cricket returns to North Cyprus this Sunday
League Cricket returns to North Cyprus this Sunday with the TRNC welcoming the Nicosia Cricket Club. The game will be played at their home ground, the Pia Bella Stadium, near the New Harbour in Girne, starting at 11am.
Captain Danish Afridi and the selectors are faced with a difficult choice as they have 3 games in 3 weeks. They had planned to use some of the development players for the fixture, as the game’s long term growth is their major priority. However, the very real possibility of winning their first trophy creates a tantalising dilemma. Afridi says there will be extra training concentrating particularly on fielding, as the old saying goes ‘catches win matches’ and then a final decision will be taken a few days before the match.
It will be a fascinating contest, Nicosia and the TRNC are equal top of the league on 30 points and as Communications Manager Ian Fell has put on the Club’s website, it’s a must win game. The reality is, only a victory will allow the TRNC Club to remain in serious contention of becoming Creditwest North Cyprus League champions & clinching the trophy.
TRNC team manager Nigel Holman says the Club has bowling in depth and is the main weapon in the side’s armoury. He feels confident whatever combination of pace men from Ali Adshad, Janwali Khan or Sajjad Kamal are used to lead the attack, with support of their consist spinners like Zafran, they will be a formidable force. However, Holman’s real worry is the club’s batsmen are too vulnerable with no TRNC batsman really dominating in the league so far, although there have been useful knocks from Shahzad, Haigh, Jawad, Danish and Zafran.
