“I and the United States only recognise the South Cyprus government as the 'legitimate' government on the island”
|The news that Joe Biden, the Vice President of the United States of America was to visit this island was regarded as a major political event. The second most powerful man in the West (possibly the world?) was taking an interest in the “Cyprus problem”!
Super, great, wonderful, in the words of William Shakespeare, Kibris for the first time, as South Cyprus has always done, will “be able to strut its hour upon the stage”!
What was the point of ALL those earlier meetings? Will reunification ever occur?
Since moving here in 2002 I have read details of the ongoing intercommunal meetings with interest. However, I am now confused by reports that, following Monday’s meeting, RoC president Nicos Anastasiades told TRNC president Dervis Eroglu that ‘there must be proposals from both sides on all core issues of the Cyprus problem’ even though previous negotiators had made progress in them.
Apparently, both sides agreed that there must be a finalisation of the ‘current phase’ as soon as possible before the proposals can be discussed and then the talks on reunification will go into phase three.
