Playground Transformed at Special Needs School
By Marion Stuart

'Better late than never!' said Musa Saygi, Headmaster of the Karakum Special Needs School, as he watched the ribbon being cut as a sign of the official opening of the refurbished playground. The project had been undertaken by Liman Rotary Club of Kyrenia with help from other organisations, and had been the project chosen by Yasgan Musannif when he was President of the Club in 2012/13.

The theme in Rotary for the year had been 'Creating Projects and helping children with disabilities'   As Yasgan bey explained "We spoke with Musa Saygi as we felt there could be a project with which we could help at the school, and he told us about the need for the playground and garden to be refurbished."

From that conversation the budding architects at GAU were commissioned to present designs from which Rotary could choose. The playground and the grounds of the school have been cleared, tidied, the surface under the plastic formerly sand, was replaced with rubber squares, and the adjacent area which had been stone was replaced with concrete. The swings and benches were replenished, and the garden was cleared and various plants replaced the weeds and tree cuttings which had accumulated.

Liman Rotary Club was assisted financially by St.Hilarion Rotary, the Kaner Group, the British Resident Society, and others, plus the Kyrenia municipality assisted with the provision of labour and certain materials. The total cost of the project was 30,000tl, 10,000tl of which was given by Liman Rotary, 1,000tl by St.Hilarion Club, and the remainder by the other contributory benefactors.

Due to hitches the completion of the work was delayed and the handing over had been scheduled for last year. There was a great atmosphere of rejoicing as the ribbon was cut declaring the playground open on the 21st in front of representatives of all the organisations and individuals who had made the event possible. Two of the children of the school held the four pair of scissors on a tray as the four men lined up behind the ribbon, and together, Ali Tektan, Deputy Mayor of Kyrenia Municipality, Rami Ozsan of Rotary, Yasgan Musannif of Rotary and Ali Nizam, from the Education Department, cut it.

Musa Saygi was delighted "It is a great event because of the way people think about us and help us and our children. This playground will give quality time to our children, and we want to thank Girne Liman Rotary Club and all others who helped. And we thank the Municipality for helping us to have this safe playground."
