Maraş is Turkish

My ramble on 29th August regarding the forthcoming “peace” talks included a query on the return of the Gazi Maḡusa suburb Maraş “to the rightful owners”.

Varosha

This appeared to be of immediate benefit only (or mainly) to the Greek Cypriots. However, now the National Council has finally made an official statement that the vast majority of land in Maraş is Turkish “vakiflar” land that was misappropriated by the then occupying power – Britain - and then sold to the Greeks! Suddenly restoring Maraş to the rightful owners (the Turkish religious foundation) is a very good thing!

Remains of 6 missing Greek Cypriots unearthed in Minareliköy

Excavations had started on Tuesday in Minareliköy in order to unearth remains which are believed to belong to six Greek Cypriot missing persons. The remains had been found on Sunday during excavations for the foundations of a building. The bulldozer operator initially thought he had uncovered animal bones, he stopped diggin to investigate, and on realising that they were human remains he had immediately informed the police and the Committee on the Missing Persons. It has been announced that DNA tests will be conducted and the remains will be given to the families.

Murat Soysal, assistant of the Turkish Cypriot member of the Committee on Missing Persons explained that they had been informed two years ago that six Greek Cypriot missing persons were buried in the area, but their efforts gave no result then, due to the lack of eye witnesses.

Sevket Fedai, mukhtar of Minareliköy, said he informed the “police” and the Committee on the Missing Persons as soon as he found out about the incident and added: “We have been hearing many stories in the past. The remains were really found under an olive tree just like it had been said." He went on further to say,"If anyone has any information about this please come forward”.

Xenophon Kallis, assistant of the Greek Cypriot member of the Committee on Missing Persons, thanked those for reporting the findings.
