A visit to the North Cyprus of yesteryear – 1995

Upon returning to the UK following a holiday in North Cyprus in November 1994 we showed our video and photos to many friends – probably bored them, if the truth is to be told – and two friends, Joan and David Gummer, decided to visit the TRNC the following November. Then, following their return, we watched their video and David was generous enough to allow me to copy it. This allowed me later to take a number of photos (video grabs) from it, that now make interesting viewing.

A short trip across Kyrenia

To start you on a short tour of their 1995 photos I include their drive from Girne’s Hirondelle roundabout across to the Bellapais traffic lights after which they turned right at the new harbour crossroads [it was not yet a roundabout] to travel beyond Oscar’s.

Photo 3 is of the traffic lights at the Bellapais crossroads and photo 5 is the New Harbour crossroads – where there is now a very busy roundabout.

To us viewing it now the journey seems to be lacking in both vehicles and buildings and it seems impossible to accept that a journey that took around three minutes almost twenty years ago can take so long nowadays. I make no apologies for the poor quality of the video grabs, as it was 1995 remember … the days of using tape cassettes for recording, reused tapes at that, and dirty recording heads. Famagusta from 1995 In one respect, the ruins of Famagusta have not altered though the city has tidied itself up since these photos were taken. The photos follow a very short tour into the old walled Turkish town of Mağusa, around the ruins in the town and outside the walls down to the beach and the deserted ghost town of Maraş/Varosha.

Maraş/VaroshaOld Ercan International Airport
All holidays must, unfortunately, come to an end, and, on 19th November 1995, Mr and Mrs Gummer flew out of Ercan Airport by Onur Air. David continued videoing until he boarded the plane and his record makes interesting viewing to us now – though he did miss a shot of the large colour photo of Turkish Air Force pilot, Fehmi Ercan, who died aged 39 during the 1974 Peace Operation, in whose honour the airport was named. After sitting in the airport departure lounge, they checked their luggage on the tarmac and looked at the waving crowds on the open air, outside balcony before climbing the steps into their plane.
