A first for northern Cyprus – The Cyprus Rally enters the north
For the first time in living history the Cyprus Car Rally took crews through both north and south of the capital, where the streets were lined with eager spectators while many roads were closed for locals which brought a degree of discontent as traffic jams prevented people going about their daily business.
It was reported that among the many cheering spectators, one of the loudest cries of all which rang through the air, was that of the Turkish Cypriot spectators who stood on top of the ancient walls of the city of Lefkosia /Nicosia and cheered on their own crews.
This Cyprus Premier International sporting event brought many thrills but thankfully not to many spills, although some drivers finished with damaged cars, Antonin Tlustak, Martin Hudec, Jaroslav Orsak and others.
The electric atmosphere of the event saw Yazeed Al-Rajhi rock home to a dynamic finish. For many people in northern Cyprus the winner is seen as the ‘victory’ of having this event shared across the Green Line.
